Councillor Vacancy

Join the Council by Co-option

Local councils are the first tier of government, closest to the people they serve. Councils make decisions about everyday issues that shape our lives - from play areas and allotments to community events and local services. Councils only thrive when residents take part in the democratic process.

Councillors represent the interests of their community. They listen to residents, debate issues, and make decisions collectively as a council. They agree budgets and set the precept (the council’s share of council tax), ensuring that public money is spent wisely. Good councillors are approachable, fair, and committed to improving quality of life for everyone in the parish.

Broadway Parish Council currently has a vacancy which can be filled by co-option. This means that instead of waiting for an election, the council can directly appoint a new councillor to serve the community.

What Does Co-option Involve?

Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old, a British citizen (or a citizen of the Commonwealth or Republic of Ireland), and either be on the electoral roll, occupy land or premises in the parish, or live/work within three miles of the parish boundary.

Application: Interested residents are invited to put themselves forward for the vacancy. The council will consider applications and formally vote to co-opt the successful candidate at a council meeting.

Commitment: Co-opted councillors have the same responsibilities as elected councillors - representing residents, attending meetings, and helping shape local decisions.
